About three hundred years ago, the first part of the name of Kaliganga or Kaliganga river flowing over this town was named Kalia by the combination of Kali and the letter A of the word Ganga. It is situated on the banks of the river Kaliganga and is now known as Kalia Village and Kalia Upazila after Kalia. It is bounded on the north by Lohagarh Upazila of Narail District, on the south by Dighalia and Terkhada Upazilas of Khulna District, on the east by Gopalgajna District and Mollarhat Upazila by Bagerhat District and on the west. Narail Sadar Upazila and Abhaynagar of Jessore District and Fultala Upazila of Khulna District
